Varicose & Spider Veins

Varicose veins are large dilated blood vessels that have a red or bluish colour and protrude above the surface of the skin. Varicose veins are commonly associated with symptoms such as aching, throbbing, tired legs, varicose leg ulcers, cramp, heavy legs, burning, itching, varicose eczema, leg swelling and restless. or all appointments in the Napier or Auckland clinic:

What is Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy can be used to treat both varicose and spider veins. A tiny needle is used to inject the veins with a medication that irritates the lining of the vein. In response, the veins collapse and are reabsorbed. The surface veins are no longer visible. With this procedure, veins can be dealt with at an early stage, helping to prevent further complications. Small spidery veins can be treated directly at the Wellness Centre.

What is Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy?
For large knotty varicose veins, the principal treatment is the same as above but is performed at Radiology, Royston Hospital under modern ultrasound visualisation. The high tech Ultrasound machine allows us to visualize the deeper veins that cause the problems with the veins seen near the surface of the skin. With ultrasound guided sclerotherapy we can see the needle and the vein deep under the skin and visualize that we are directly injecting the problem vein. The procedure only takes an hour and there is no cutting, no stitches, no time off work or sport, no general anaesthetic. This is an extremely safe and very successful alternative to surgery.

Will I need to take time off after the procedure?
No down time is necessary following your treatment for varicose veins. In fact, we encourage you to walk and resume daily routines. We do ask that if you do high impact aerobics, you take a week or so off from that aspect of your routine. However, you may return to work or other daily activities straightaway. After the treatment of larger vessels, some pigmentation may appear, but this is temporary and will fade over time.
